The Jedi Slices Back!

You're the Jedi now.

If I’m ever talking to someone about VR and whether it's worth it, the first game I bring to light is Beat Saber. The game doesn’t have a story line or a multiplayer mode (standard), yet it is the most addicting game I’ve ever played on PC or in VR.

The goal of the game is to hit red and blue blocks with either the red or blue Lightsaber (as seen above). Each box has an arrow; you must hit the box in the same direction as the arrow is facing; you can change the colours of the boxes and sabers as well. The game comes with 3 starter packs of songs as well as a bonus pack: Vol 1, Vol 2, Vol 3, and Extras. Each song has 5 difficulties: easy, normal, hard, expert, and expert+.

I rate Beat Saber a 8.5/10. Those 2.5 were subtracted due to the lack of standard content; the game comes with only 15-20 songs and this is only about 1-2 hours of consistent gameplay. However, in those 1 to 2 hours you rack up quite the sweat; this game gives you one hell of a workout which is one reason that it’s my favorite VR game. You can buy DLC but I don’t consider them worth it.

My second reason for loving this game is the massive modding community; 500,000 of the 1.5 million playerbase use mods. With mods you can download 10,000+ different and unique charts (songs). This game would be totally different without mods. You can also download different Sabers, blocks, platforms, and even avatars that can be used in the multiplayer mod. I am personally ranked 10,243 in the world on Scoresaber.

If I were to compare this game, I would compare Beat Saber to the other VR game, Audica, and the non-VR ,“original”, rhythm game Guitar Hero. I personally think that it destroys both of these games in almost all aspects. Audica doesn’t give you the same physical satisfaction and Guitar Hero is of course not as good because you aren’t immersed in VR like you are with Beat Saber.

In my opinion, no other rhythm game will ever overtake Beat Saber because of how addictive and enjoyable it is, even though it is incredibly repetitive. I think the repetitiveness is what makes the game more enjoyable because every chart is the same concept yet completely different from any other.
