My name is Gandalf The Great and this is my opinion of the Shire.
I have only been to Hobbiton but it gives me a good understanding of what the rest of the Shire looks like. Unfortunately, my visits haven’t been as frequent lately because I have had many responsibilities to take care of out of the Shire and Bilbo has left. he was the only reason I ever really visited. I made a promise to Bilbo before he left, I promised I would pop in frequently to check on his nephew, Frodo, but I am afraid I’ve broken this promise with how long I’ve been gone.
All of the buildings and shops are just too small for me; I have hit my head on the low ceilings an uncountable amount of times. Youch! Everything may be small but it is incredibly beautiful; The entire place radiates positive energy. Outside of the Shire is like an entirely different planet, everything is bland and boring.
All of the buildings are buried inside of hills, their features are circular: the windows, doors, and even the chimneys. Their architecture definitely fits their size but it certainly doesn’t fit me, towering over them at 6’4.
The people all seem very coordinated and organized in Hobbiton. They certainly love their gardening! The Hobbits range in height from 2 feet to 4 feet so the entire place is designed for people much shorter than 6’4. One time I was going over the bridge to get into Hobbiton and it collapsed under my weight; they had to fish me out of the river! However, they are all very kind and caring. I am quite well known in Hobbiton, they don’t seem to like other men very much, I am the only one they don’t run away from, even though I tower over them.
I have heard that other parts of the Shire are much more queer than Hobbiton. From the tales I’ve heard, Hobbiton is the best place to be in all of middle earth.
There does seem to be an economy in Hobbiton. The poorer live in smaller hills that aren’t dug out as well and have little to no windows; the richer, like Bilbo Baggins, seem to live in large hills with many colourful windows and beautiful round doors. It doesn’t matter to me... I bang my head in all of them!
